kenya mara north camp breakfast service 01

Two lists

Eight that matter, eight that do not

Neither list is a judgement about quality. One was designed for this shape of day and one was not.

The eight that survive

  1. A bed you can see out of. The best feature in the market, usually free, and used twice a day every day.
  2. Shade on the deck at midday. You will spend four hours a day there. It matters more than the bedroom.
  3. Same-day laundry, included. You are dusty daily and packing 15kg for light aircraft. This changes what you have to carry.
  4. Hot water before six. A generator and plumbing question, and a surprisingly variable one.
  5. A kitchen that bends. Breakfast in the bush at nine; dinner at seven when you are finished.
  6. A guide assigned to you. By the third morning he anticipates rather than reacts.
  7. Your own vehicle. The day’s shape becomes yours rather than a committee’s.
  8. Water to be in, in the middle of the day — and in sun after two, which a surprising number are not.

The eight that do not

What is soldWhy it does not fit
A late-night barYou will be asleep by ten. So will everybody else.
An extensive spa menuThe only window is the long middle, when you want to lie still, not be handled
A tasting menuYou have been up since 5.15. Good food, not long food.
A freestanding bathWater is trucked or pumped. Used once, for the photograph.
An outdoor shower as the only showerGlorious at four. Cold at 5.30, which is when you shower.
A pillow menuYou will be unconscious in four minutes regardless.
Room technologyThe generator stops, and you are outside all day.
A gymYou have been sitting in a vehicle since six and will be again at four.

The three requests worth making by name

None of these is an upgrade. All three are things a specialist can ask for at booking and frequently get.

  • A tent that opens onto the view from the bed — ask which ones do, they are not all the same
  • A tent away from the main area — quieter, and usually what the "honeymoon" tent actually is
  • Dinner on the deck on two nights — ask how many they will do, rather than whether they will
